How do we organize practical help?

Testing - The primary objective is to guarantee access to anonymous and cost-free serological (test through drawing blood) testing for HIV, for all persons who wish to know their serological status. It functions as a multidisciplinary technical and support team and also as a prevention service through its counseling activities.

Counseling - This is a practice that aims to promote the following for individuals:
a) Reduction in stress level
b) Reflection which enables a perception of risks and the adoption of safer practices
c) Their compliance with treatment
d) Communication with and treatment of sexual partners and sharers of intravenous drugs

These activities are carried out with specific groups by means of projects in behavioral intervention and in units of the public Unified Health System, which provide care to persons infected with HIV/AIDS and other STDs, as well as within prenatal services and health care for women, children and adolescents.

Referral Services

It is important for any counselor to have good mental health facilities as back up referring on worried well patients in need of psychiatric appropriate support.

Sometimes the counselor may feel it is best to see a patient a few times himself until he feels that the patient has built up sufficient trust for referral. It is often helpful for the counselor to contact the General Practicioner (family doctor, if any), always with the patient's written agreement. Clearly a patient who is unhappy about his GP or his GP's ability to deal with the consequences of HIV infection should change his GP, which M.E.N.T.O.R.S. can assist them with.

Professional counseling would be arranged by the project through referrals and from governmental organizations and non-governmental hospitals, centers, churches or mosques.
